1. Geography

Trace a map of Europe. You can use either a large piece of poster-size paper or a double page in your notebooks. Name the countries and their capital cities. Use your list of European Union capital cities but remember to add capital cities for countries which are not part of the EU (e.g. Switzerland).

2. Literature and Language

Prepare for a vocabulary text on Animal Farm using 1) the notes made during our reading in class and 2) your dictionary.

Write a short (two or three lines) diary entry at the end of each day e.g. if you travel make notes of what you see/do. You may use your diary entries to write an essay in the week after the vacation.

3. Remember there’s a quiz competition coming up in May so keep on improving your general knowledge!

Literature

Finish reading Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. As you reach the end of each page, note all the words which are new to you. Look up the defintions in your dictionary and, after finding the one that fits the context, add it to your vocabulary list. Then reread the page before starting the next one.

Write a brief outline-a synopsis- of each chapter. Two or three sentences, in your own words, will suffice to sum up the storyline in each chapter.

The Martian Chronicles: Prepare for a comprehension and vocabulary test on what we have read in class.

Geography

Choose one of the countries mentioned in Rachel Redford, Book One. Prepare a presentation on the country chosen.

Reminder

Your research on the origins of the tin can must be presented in class on 6th March. You can make a poster for your presentation and include your own drawings e.g. to illustrate a Bolivian mine.

2. Rachel Redford/An international Approach, Book 1: revise all the Tool Kits for a test on 05 January 2012. Finish the chapter in progress completing all the exercices.

3. Write ten sentences outlining ten alternative uses for the strings/cords on paper carrier bags. Prepare to demonstrate at least four of your ideas in a presentation in class. Due date: 03 to 09 January 2012?

Although holiday + homework = the dreaded oxymoron* which appears before each vacation, I have selected work that you might find interesting and must do as part of the ongoing process of improving your written English.

*oxymoron: a combination of contradictory words

Press Article/International Herald Tribune, 20th October

Read the article about the 2011 Tour de France race using the map provided to trace the cyclists’ route.

Reminder about method:

1. Read the article straight through.

2. Read the article again writing down each word which is new to you or difficult to understand in its context.

3. Use your Engish-English dictionary to write down the full definition of each word on your list (e.g. for ‘provisionally’ which is an adverb look up and write out the meaning of the adjective ‘provisional’ )

3. Read the article again using your own word list to understand each word in its context.

4. Re-write, in your own words, any sentence you find difficult to understand (using, for example, synonyms).

I will check your notebooks on 4th November to ensure you have done this neatly on the page next to the one on which the article is pasted.

There will be comprehension and vocabulary questions based on this article in the Term Test on 8th November.

Hard Times

Re-read the chapters studied. There will be questions in the 8th November Term Test about the characters created by Charles Dickens. Use the notes you’ve taken in class during our discussions about each character.

HISTORY

Re-read pages One to Eleven in SHP History plus the information in your notebooks to prepare for your History term test on 9th November.

BOOK REPORTS

This is ongoing homework. I expect to see your book report (+/- 50 words. Remember this is not a complete account of the plot/storyline!)on at least one book of your own choice which you have read since the beginning of term. You will present this report during a short (five-minute) presentation in front of the class saying why you chose the book and why you enjoyed reading it.
