Révisions vacances de la Toussaint

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK
For all students in Group 3 English + History and Geography in English/Eblagh

Although holiday + homework = the dreaded oxymoron* which appears before each vacation, I have selected work that you might find interesting and must do as part of the ongoing process of improving your written English.

*oxymoron: a combination of contradictory words

Press Article/International Herald Tribune, 20th October

Read the article about the 2011 Tour de France race using the map provided to trace the cyclists’ route.

Reminder about method:

1. Read the article straight through.

2. Read the article again writing down each word which is new to you or difficult to understand in its context.

3. Use your Engish-English dictionary to write down the full definition of each word on your list (e.g. for ‘provisionally’ which is an adverb look up and write out the meaning of the adjective ‘provisional’ )

3. Read the article again using your own word list to understand each word in its context.

4. Re-write, in your own words, any sentence you find difficult to understand (using, for example, synonyms).

I will check your notebooks on 4th November to ensure you have done this neatly on the page next to the one on which the article is pasted.

There will be comprehension and vocabulary questions based on this article in the Term Test on 8th November.

Hard Times

Re-read the chapters studied. There will be questions in the 8th November Term Test about the characters created by Charles Dickens. Use the notes you’ve taken in class during our discussions about each character.

HISTORY

Re-read pages One to Eleven in SHP History plus the information in your notebooks to prepare for your History term test on 9th November.

BOOK REPORTS

This is ongoing homework. I expect to see your book report (+/- 50 words. Remember this is not a complete account of the plot/storyline!)on at least one book of your own choice which you have read since the beginning of term. You will present this report during a short (five-minute) presentation in front of the class saying why you chose the book and why you enjoyed reading it.
