1. History

Write the essay on your chosen World War 11 hero/heroine as explained in class and prepare for your presentation in class. Reminder for Myriam and Cameron: start researching your second subject, the French Resistance which you’ll prepare for a joint presentation.

2. Literature

i) Shakespeare/Richard 11
Revise for a comprehension and vocabulary test on pages 80 to 88. Written test on 18th March.
Learn your lines for an oral test on 19th March (N.B. this time both diction and memorization will be graded) as follows: page 49 lines 31 to 39: Alexander, John-John, Gabriel and Mike. Page 65, lines 14 to 27: Cameron, Myriam, Mohammed, Ricky and Rofaida. A student may prepare both extracts and will be graded accordingly.
ii) Oscar Wilde/ The Importance of Being Earnest
Finish reading the play and prepare for a comprehension test (on 21st March) about the lives of the main characters. View one of the many film versions of the play.

1. Shakespeare/Hamlet. Act 2, Scene 2-from page 42 onwards- line 4 to line 420 inclusive. Prepare for a comprehension and vocabulary test on 03 January 2012.

2. John T. Hawks/The Traveller: read upto page 112 inclusive. Prepare for a class discussion on 05 January 2012.

3. History/Geography: pages 40 to 46. Focus on the map of Italy. Do all the exercises in your notebook.

4. Prepare a presentation on a practical application of your own making based on recycled materials. N.B. The presentation will be graded as follows: use of English; public speaking skills; research; creativity as well as your ability to answer questions about how you conceived and developed your project. Due: 03 to 11 January 2012.

Holiday Homework (3èmes/4èmes)

1. History. Chapter 2: The Industrial Revolution.
Read pages 24 to 34.
Do exercises 1, 2, 3 and 5 in your notebook.
Write an essay (250 words) describing working conditions in factories during the Industrial Revolution in Britain. Give the essay your own title.

2. Literature. Shakespeare
Hamlet. Re-read the introduction and finish reading Act 1 (Scene 3 onwards). Prepare for a comprehension and vocabulary test on 3rd November.

3. Geography/ Science: Extract from The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene
Read ‘Matter Particles are also Waves (page 103 to the top of page 105). Make a vocabulary list in your notebook. Prepare for a class discussion on this topic.

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK GROUP 3/EBLAGH (6ÈMES/5ÈMES)

1. Rachel Redford Book 1. Create a Venn diagram making notes on the similarities and differences between yourself and the main character in the text (pages 7 to 11). Then write a composition (with at least three paragraghs and 150 words) comparing the girl’s life with yours. (Your composition must be handed in on 3rd November).

2. Read the article ‘Earth’s Penguins on Thin Ice”. Make a vocabulary list in your notebook using your English-English dictionary. Prepare for a test on vocabulary and comprehension.

3. Geography. Learn the names of the 27 member states of the European Union and their capital cities. Test on 3rd November.

4. Black Beauty. Finish reading chapters 1 to 15. Use your dictionary to make a list of all new or unfamiliar words. Then read the chapters again to prepare for a comprehension test.

Fossils Fuels: read and learn the information in the sheets pasted in your notebooks. Do the exercises and prepare for a test on
Thursday, 28th April.

Literature
Read Chapters 3 and of ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ updating your vocabulary list as you advance. Write the page number before the definition for each new word in the notebook. When you find a sentence too difficult to understand try to break it up into smaller parts and then rewrite it in your own words in your notebook using your vocabulary list. I will check your notebooks after the vacation.

Write an essay (250-300 words) using the statistics on the comparative chart given to you about the mortality rates for countries involved in WW11:

“Explain the mortality rates for civilians in Poland, the Soviet Union and Japan during World War 11.”

Research the Bengal Tiger (you may use information about Richard Parker from Life of Pi as well as other sources). Draw a picture of the tiger and make notes in your notebook. Prepare for a test.

LITERATURE

LIFE OF PI. Read Chapters 21 to Chapter 36 inclusive. Look up all words which are new to you in an English-English dictionary. Write a synopsis of each chapter after you finish reading it. (most of these chapters are very short so for these, one or two lines will suffice).

HISTORY

SHP The Twentieth Century. Read pages 20 to 21 and use the information given plus additional material from your own research to answer the following question: How were British women’s lives changed by the the First World War 1914-1918?

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

Although holiday + homework = the dreaded oxymoron* which appears before each vacation, I have selected work that you might find interesting and must do as part of the ongoing process of improving your written English.

*oxymoron: a combination of contradictory words

3èmes/4èmes

1. Press article about Esther Tuttle (International Herald Tribune 20th October)
N.B. All press articles given to you will be included in your Term Tests on 8th and 9th November.

Reminder about the method you can use:

A) Read the article noting any new/difficult words in your notebook.
B) Use your English-English dictionary to write out the complete definition of each of these words in your notebook e.g. for ‘traipsed’ look up ‘to traispe’ then note that it is an intransitive verb before you write down its meaning.
C) Read the article again using your word list to try to understand each word in its context.
D) Write out every sentence containing a word which you still find difficult . Then rewrite the sentence in your own words (e.g. using synonyms).
E) Write a paragraph summing up what the article is about. (50 words should suffice i.e. a SYNOPSIS/brief outline not a paraphrase of the whole article )

2. Life of PI

Re-read Chapters One to Fourteen

Make a list on a separate piece of paper of all the animals mentioned by Yann Martell to illustrate his theory about zoos. Use your dictionary. Leave plenty of space between the name of each animal. You’ll take these lists to the zoo on 18th November and complete them with you own impressions of the animals you see.

Read pages 10 to 12 in The Twentieth Century
Write four paragraphs summing up why World War 1 happened. Use these headings:
